Turkey Talk: Review

Thank you to everyone who made it out to last weeks informal event, Turkey Talk: Facts, Feasts and the Industry That Fuels Them.  We enjoyed an abundance of tasty food and pondering conversation with Lucy, Tucker, Jessica, Yann and Christine.

Some Serious Dining
Our menu was quite extensive, we enjoyed a first course of a curried squash soup made by Lucy.

Our main course was roasted chicken legs with lemon and rosemary, mashed potatoes, gravy, and cranberry sauce with a big crunchy salad on the side.  We snacked on Tuckers homemade bread all evening, and enjoyed apple cider brought by Jessica!

What a nice spread of beautiful food!

The GIGANTIC Salad

Dessert was a vegan pumpkin pie served with vanilla ice cream made by Christine, and a chocolate cake from Jessica.  Dessert disappeared rather quickly, so there are no photos of it!

Our conversation took place after the meal.  We agreed that we were a little shocked by the source material, and felt manipulated by the way it used our emotions for an ad campaign.  We were intrigued that a piece of advertising could make us feel the breadth of emotions we were feeling while watching the video.  However, we all agreed that we would not be likely to purchase the advertised product after seeing the advertisement - mostly because we felt so manipulated.

Some members of the group pointed out that it would be very difficult for a large food corporation to use organic, locally sourced foods to make their products, and that Chipotle in particular can only source its meats as cruelty free and organic with 80% accuracy.

We talked about why a large corporation would want to have an ad campaign like this.  We considered that Chipotle could have seen organic and local farming as a trend that they could profit from.  Many of us felt that it was likely that Chipotle is not the caring and aware company it claims to be, despite its advertisements.

We questioned the validity of 'organic'.  How can we call something organic?  What are the guidelines for organic?  How can they be reinforced?

Our group spoke about meat consumption.  Some said that they tried to limit their consumption of meat for environmental reasons, and only ate it monthly or as a special occasion food.  Other members said that while they felt that they should reduce their meat intake, they felt that the proteins derived from meat were important for their health, and chose to eat meat once or twice a week.  Some claimed to consume meat daily, and did not feel that reducing meat consumption was important to them.

Overall, we had a great discussion with some delicious food!

Thank you again to everyone who contributed their ideas to make this event as special as it was.  We hope to host another event soon!

Sincerely,
Lucy and Christine
